here is a link to a page that has great detail on how to measure a wire rope and how to convert english units to metric if needed. http://www.macwhyte.com/Resource_/TechnicalReference/784/How-to-measure-wire-rope-diameter.pdf

Other ropes. All rope which has been idle for a period of a month or more due to shutdown or storage of a crane on which it is installed shall be given a thorough inspection before it is used. This inspection shall be for all types of deterioration and shall be performed by an appointed person whose approval shall be required for further use of the rope. A certification record shall be available for inspection which includes the date of inspection, the signature of the person who performed the inspection and an identifier for the rope which was inspected. According to a study published by the National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Center for Construction Research and Training reports that side pulling is one of the 13 most common ways people are killed or injured while using cranes. But what is side pulling and why is it so dangerous? OSHA defines side pull as “the hoist pull acting horizontally when the hoist lines are not operated vertically” in their report on overhead and gantry cranes, In other words, the crane is used to “tow” a load that is not lined up properly to get it into position. Side pulling purposely is extremely dangerous unless the crane is stable and the load is small. In the vast majority of cases, side pulls should not be used, even if the process could save some time. Using a crane to move even a small load horizontally can be fatal. If you are going to operate a crane while on the job, it is important to understand how to use one properly, and if you are an employer who owns cranes, it is crucial that you provide on the job training for your employees, not just to teach about side pull, but also to help them understand all aspects of crane safety. OSHA DESCRIPTION 1910.179(a)(6) "Gantry crane" means a crane similar to an overhead crane except that the bridge for carrying the trolley or trolleys is rigidly supported on two or more legs running on fixed rails or other runway. THESE CRANES CAN BE VERY USEFUL FOR COMPANYS THAT DONT NEED TO PICK UP HUGE LOADS BUT STILL NEED THE EXTRA HELP ALSO BEING ON WHEELS THEY CAN BE MOVED TO DIFFERENT AREAS WHEN NEEDED. WHILE THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF CRANES, THEY ALL HAVE THE ABILITY TO MAKE MANY JOBS MUCH EASIER BY BEING ABLE TO LIFT ENORMOUS WEIGHT. BUT THEY ALSO SHARE THE POTENTIAL FOR DANGER WHEN THEY ARE NOT OPERATED SAFTLY.
CRANE-RELATED ACCIDENTS ARE OFTEN SERIOUS, DUE TO THE CUMBERSOME AND HEAVY LOAD THAT ARE LIFTED. A SMALL MISCACULATION, OR A BRIEF MOMENT OF INATTETION, AND DISASTER COULD STRIKE. ONCE A LOAD FALLS NOT MUCH CAN BE TO STOP IT, AND THERE IS LITTLE TIME FOR PEOPLE TO SAFELY MOVE OUT OF THE WAY. A CO-WORKER COULD BE INJURED, OR EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT COULD BE DAMAGED OR DESTROYED.... INCLUDING THE CRANE ITSELF. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT OVER 90% OF CRANE-RELATED ACCIDENTS ARE CAUSED BY HUMAN ERROR. SO IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR EMPLOYEES TO LEARN HOW TO WORK WITH CRANES SAFELY. THEY NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE PROPER PREPARATION, EQUIPMENT AND ATTITUDE, COSTLY ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES CAN BE AVOIDED OBJECTIVES BE ABLE TO CONDUCT A THOROUGH INSPECTION OF BOTH THEIR WORKSITE AND THE CRANES THEY ARE WORKING WITH UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCES AND THE SIMILARITIES AMONG THE MAJOR TYPE OF CRANES BE FAMILIAR WITH BOTH GENERAL AND OPERATIONAL CRANE SAFETY DEVICES AND KNOW HOW THEY FUNCTION KNOW THE BEST METHODS OF LIFTING AND LOWERING A LOAD BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE AND USE STANDARD HAND SIGNALS TO DIRECT DIFFERENT CRANE OPERATIONS THIS IS A LINK TO THE OSHA WEBSITE WHERE YOU CAN FIND REGULATIONS FOR OVERHEAD CRANES AND OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_document?p_table=STANDARDS&p_id=9830
CONVERTING YOUR PENDANT STATIONS TO RADIO CONTROL CAN HAVE ALOT OF BENIFETS. BEING ABLE TO CONTROL YOUR OVERHEAD CRANE FROM A DISTANCE NOT LIMITED TO A CORD, ALSO NO OBSTACLES TO TRY TO GET THE PENDANT CORD AROUND, RADIOS FIT IN THE PALM OF YOUR HANDS AND EASY TO USE.
WE SELL AND INSTALL NEW RADIO CONTROLS JUST CALL THIS IS THE WIKI LINK PAGE FOR OVERHEAD CRANES http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overhead_crane IT HAS SOME GOOD FACTS AND HISTORY OF OVERHEAD CRANES. CHECK IT OUT.
